How eBay seller fees work

eBay charges a final value fee on the total of the sale, which is the item price plus the shipping you charge, plus sales tax in places where eBay collects it for the buyer. For most categories that is 13.6% on the part of each item up to $7,500, and 2.35% on anything above. Some categories are higher or lower: books, movies and music are 15.3%, handbags and jewelry are 15% and athletic shoes of $150 or more are 8%.

On top of the percentage there is a per-order fee of $0.30 for orders of $10 or less and $0.40 for orders over $10. You also get 250 free listings each month without a Store. After that, a listing costs $0.35 whether or not it sells.

Why shipping changes your profit

Because the percentage applies to the total sale including shipping, charging the buyer for postage does not avoid the fee on that money. If you charge $5 shipping and eBay takes about 14% of the total, roughly 70 cents of that shipping income goes straight back in fees. Free shipping means you carry the postage cost yourself but pay fees on a smaller total, so the calculator is the quickest way to compare the two.

Use the pricing goal box to turn the calculation around. Enter the profit in dollars or the margin you want, and the calculator shows the lowest price that reaches it with your costs and your chosen category.

Worked example

You sell an item in most categories for $40 and charge $5 shipping. The item cost you $15 and you pay $5 to post it.

ItemAmount
Buyer pays you (price + shipping)$45.00
Final value fee−$6.12
Per-order fee−$0.40
Paid out after fees$38.48
Your costs (item, postage, other)−$20.00
Profit$18.48 (41.1% margin)

Total fees are $6.52, which is 14.5% of what the buyer pays.
