What PayPal charges for a payment

For US sellers, most commercial payments cost a percentage plus a fixed fee. PayPal Checkout, Guest Checkout and Pay with Venmo are 3.49% plus $0.49. A standard credit or debit card is 2.99% plus $0.49. QR code payments are cheaper at 2.29% plus $0.09, and an invoice paid by bank transfer costs 1% capped at $10.

Payments from outside the US add a 1.50% surcharge, and a currency conversion adds a spread of around 3%. Friends and Family payments are not free when they are for goods and services, and cost 2.99%.

How to charge so you receive an exact amount

The fixed fee means the percentage you lose is larger on small payments. To receive exactly $50 through Checkout you cannot simply add 3.49%, because the fee is taken from the larger total too. Enter 0 as the item cost, set your pricing goal to a profit of $50 and the calculator gives the lowest price that leaves you with $50 after fees.
